About the Role

Our client, WhatJobs Direct, is seeking an accomplished Principal Mechanical Engineer with expertise in Thermal Systems for a fully remote, senior-level position. This is a premier opportunity for a seasoned engineer to lead critical thermal management design efforts for complex products and systems, working entirely from a remote location. You will be responsible for developing innovative thermal solutions, conducting in-depth analysis, and guiding design teams. The ideal candidate possesses a profound understanding of heat transfer principles, extensive experience with thermal modeling and simulation tools, and a proven ability to drive technical excellence in a remote-first environment. If you are a recognized expert in thermal engineering and thrive in an independent, challenging role, we encourage you to apply.

This role is associated with Upington, Northern Cape, ZA, but is fully remote.

  • Conduct comprehensive thermal analysis, including natural and forced convection, conduction, radiation, and phase change heat transfer.
  • Oversee the selection and integration of thermal components such as heat sinks, fans, pumps, and heat exchangers.
  • Collaborate virtually with cross-functional engineering teams (electrical, mechanical, systems) to ensure integrated thermal solutions.
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level mechanical engineers in the thermal domain.
  • Develop and implement best practices for thermal design and testing methodologies.
  • Evaluate emerging thermal management technologies and propose their adoption where beneficial.
  • Author and present detailed technical reports and findings to management and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to strategic R&D planning and technology roadmap development for thermal systems.

Requirements

  • Expert proficiency in CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+) and thermal analysis tools.
  • Deep understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer phenomena, and material properties relevant to thermal applications.
  • Proven track record of successfully designing and implementing thermal solutions for challenging engineering problems.
  • Experience with laboratory testing and validation of thermal systems.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, essential for remote team collaboration and guidance.
