About the Role

Our client, a pioneering force in the Energy sector, is seeking an exceptional Lead Solar PV Design Engineer to join their fully remote team. This role is critical in driving the design and engineering excellence for utility-scale and commercial solar photovoltaic projects. You will be responsible for leading a team of design engineers, setting design standards, and ensuring the technical integrity and economic viability of solar installations across various regions. This is a remote-first position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere, while collaborating closely with project development, construction, and operations teams globally. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design process for large-scale solar PV projects, ensuring optimal system performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
• Develop and implement design standards, best practices, and quality control procedures for solar PV systems.
• Mentor, train, and manage a team of solar PV design engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
• Perform and oversee detailed energy yield assessments and performance simulations using industry-standard software (e.g., PVSyst, SAM).
• Review and approve technical designs, drawings, and specifications for civil, electrical, and mechanical aspects of solar projects.
• Collaborate closely with project managers, procurement teams, and external stakeholders to ensure design alignment with project goals and timelines.
• Stay current with advancements in solar PV technology, storage solutions, and grid interconnection requirements.
• Conduct technical due diligence for potential project acquisitions and partnerships.
• Contribute to proposal development and provide technical support during the sales process.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in solar PV system design and engineering, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or senior role.
• Extensive experience with utility-scale and commercial solar project design, including AC/DC systems, inverters, mounting structures, and balance of system components.
• Proficiency in solar simulation software (e.g., PVSyst, Helioscope, SAM) and CAD tools.
• Deep understanding of solar resource assessment, energy modeling, and grid interconnection standards.
• Proven ability to lead and manage remote engineering teams effectively.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• Familiarity with South African grid codes and renewable energy policies is a plus.
