Principal Electrical Design Engineer - Infrastructure (Remote)

About the Role

Our client, a renowned engineering consultancy specializing in large-scale infrastructure projects, is seeking a highly experienced Principal Electrical Design Engineer to join their esteemed team. This is a fully remote position, allowing you to leverage your expertise from anywhere within South Africa. You will be responsible for leading the electrical design aspects of major infrastructure developments, including but not limited to transportation, utilities, and industrial facilities. This role demands a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven track record of delivering complex projects successfully. As a principal engineer, you will mentor junior staff, set design standards, and ensure the highest quality of engineering output for our national and international clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of complex infrastructure projects from concept through to completion.
• Develop detailed electrical system designs, including power distribution, lighting, earthing, and lightning protection.
• Produce high-quality design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and calculations.
• Conduct feasibility studies, site investigations, and risk assessments for new projects.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant national and international standards and codes (SANS, IEC, etc.).
• Oversee and review the electrical design work of other engineers and technicians.
• Provide expert technical advice and support to project teams, clients, and contractors.
• Manage electrical design project timelines, budgets, and resources effectively in a remote capacity.
• Engage in business development activities, assisting in proposal preparation and client liaison.
• Champion best practices in electrical engineering and sustainable design principles.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) registration with ECSA is mandatory.
• A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in electrical design engineering, with a significant focus on infrastructure projects.
• Extensive experience with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical design/analysis tools.
• Proven ability to lead design teams and manage complex technical challenges.
• In-depth knowledge of power systems, distribution networks, and associated equipment.
• Exceptional understanding of relevant building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards.
• Strong project management skills with experience in managing remote teams and deliverables.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience in a consultancy environment is highly desirable.
